What to expect from Chiropractic Treatment

Initial Consultation

The first visit generally takes up to an hour, and includes a consultation, a physical examination, a verbal report of findings and if appropriate, the first treatment.

Firstly a detailed case history is taken regarding any symptom you may present with on that day, but also previous episodes of pain, lifestyle factors and previous medical history.

A physical examination is then given, checking the movement of your spine and joints and your general posture. Orthopaedic and neurological tests will also be used to help the chiropractor make a diagnosis and decide the best treatment plan.

Treatment will vary depending on your specific needs usually involving specific manipulation by hand to restore correct function, mobility or alignment.

Your chiropractor may use other techniques including soft tissue work or stretching techniques.

Subsequent Visits

Duration of subsequent visits varies depending on the individual's problem.

The time for recovery varies depending on - your age, the problem, the length of time you have had it, your profession, your lifestyle, any other underlying conditions and your own commitment to any advice the chiropractor may recommend.

Many patients opt for maintenance care once they feel better. The aim is to maintain good function of the spine and try to prevent a recurrance of a spinal-related problem. Again, the frequency of your maintenance visits will depend on several factors, but most patients come back once a month to once every few months.

What will Chiropractic Treatment Involve?

The treatment will be individually tailored to each patient’s needs.
Most treatment programmes involve:

  • Adjustments and mobilisation of the spine
  • Soft tissue work on muscles
  • Advice on exercise/daily activities/diet

Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs or use surgical procedures. If chiropractic treatment is not considered appropriate, you will be referred to your General Practitioner or to a specialist for further investigations.

Emergency Appointments

The clinic will make every effort to provide same day appointments for emergencies on the above days.

*Please note: a fee of £10.00 will be payable on unfulfilled appointments or cancellations unless a minimum of 24 hours notice is given.
